The active layer of an electrode is laminated on its working surface to a current distributor and on its opposite surface to a porous coherent, hydrophobic, wetproofing layer. The active layer contains from about 60 to about 85 wt. % active carbon particles bound in a matrix of a fibrillated mixture of a fluorocarbon polymer and carbon black. The electrode is useful in chlor-alkali cells.

In a laminated electrode, having an active layer, laminated on its working surface to a current distributor and on its opposite surface to a porous coherent, hydrophobic, wetproofing layer, the improvement comprising; the active layer or sheet containing from about 60 to about 85 wt.% active carbon particles having a pore diameter of from 10 to 1000 angstroms, bound in a matrix of a fibrillated mixture of a fluorocarbon polymer and carbon black, the carbon black being present at a level of from 13 to 45 parts of carbon black per hundred parts of the mixture, the carbon black having a particle size of from 50 to 3000 angstroms, and a surface area of from 20 to 1500 square meters per gram.
