The shoulder straps and back are independent of the pack container whereby to permit distribution of the weight to be carried and to facilitate the carrying of heavy loads. The frame is formed of a series of sub-frames which unfold to form a structure which can serve as a chair and as a stand for holding and retaining the pack container in upright position when the pack is not being carried.
