A lubricant composition comprising a major amount of an oil of lubricating viscosity and a minor effective friction-reducing amount of a reaction product formed by reacting equimolar amounts of an amine represented by the forming RR′NH wherein R is an aliphatic-based hydrocarbyl radical of about 10 to about 30 carbon atoms and R′is hydrogen or an alkyl group having 12 to 18 carbon atoms, with a hydroxy-substituted aliphatic monocarboxylic acid selected from the group consisting of glycolic, lactic, and 2,2 bis-(hydroxymethyl)propionic acid, said reaction being conducted at a temperature ranging from about 60°to 180°C.
