Plated high strength steel articles having a metallic plated coating exhibit high corrosion resistance and low hydrogen reembrittlement characteristics when an acrylic polymeric coating, such as a methyl methacrylate polymer is applied to the aritcle. A corrosion inhibitor and adhesion promoter such as benzotriazole and a leveling agent such as an alkyd polymer can be incorporated with the acrylic polymer in minor proportions to further enhance the corrosion resistance characteristics of the coating. A benzotriazole-containing acrylic polymer formulation also enhances the corrosion resistance characteristics of an unplated metal substrate.

A plated metallic article exhibiting high corrosion resistance and low hydrogen embrittlement and reembrittlement characteristics comprising: a metal substrate, a metallic plated coating providing high corrosion resistance and low hydrogen embrittlement adhered to said substrate, said coating comprising a metal or metal alloy, or combination of metal alloys, and a polymeric coating providing high corrosion resistance and low hydrogen reembrittlement adherently overlying said plated coating comprising a metal or metal alloy, or combination of metal alloys, and a polymeric coating providing high corrosion resistance and low hydrogen reembrittlement adherently overlying said plated coating comprising a water insoluble acrylic polymer. The method for producing a corrosion resistant and low hydrogen embrittlement and reembrittlement resistant coating on a metal article comprising the step of coating a metal substrate to be protected from corrosion or hydrogen embrittlement with a coating solution comprising a water insoluble acrylic polymer, benzotriazole, and a solvent therefore.
