Aqueous systems also are described which comprise at least about 40% of water and an N-acrylated amino hydrocarbyl sulfonic acid or salt composition characterized by the presence within the structure of an imido group or at least one acyl acyloxy or acylimidoyl group attached to the amino nitrogen, said groups being derived from the carboxylic acid groups contained in (a) maleic acid or anhydride, or (b) a hydrocarbyl-substituted polycarboxylic acid or anhydride. An aqueous system comprising: at least about 70% by weight of water based on the weight of the aqueous system; and about 3% to about 6% by weight based on the weight of the aqueous system of an imido hydrocarbyl sulfonic acid or salt thereof obtained by reacting a hydrocarbyl substituted succinic acid or anhydride with an amino hydrocarbyl sulfonic acid or salt thereof having the formula [Figure] wherein R4 and R5 are each independently hydrogen, alkyl or aromatic and R is hydrogen or a cation.
