To heat the air contained in the cylinder up to the fuel ignition temperature, the piston is made to execute several successive compression/expansion cycles with the inlet valve and exhaust valve closed and with fuel injection cut off. During starting and under low load, the engine operates according to a cycle of more than four strokes, for example six, eight or ten strokes. An improvement in the conditions of starting and low-load running, especially for supercharged diesel engines of reduced compression ratio.
