A method is disclosed for determining the horizontal airspeed of helicopters in low speed ranges. At least three control functions, qo,i (collective pitch), qs,i (longitudinal control) and qc,i (lateral control) are measured. The magnitude of the horizontal airspeed, VH,i, is determined from its known relationship to qo,i. This magnitude is included in non-linear calibration equations qs(VH,yqc(VH,yqs(VH,i,yqc(VH,i,yqs,i and qc,i are applied to the respective control profiles and corresponding phase pairs ys,1, ys,2 and yc,1, and yc,2 located. The pairs are compared and the incident flow angle yi is determined as the value common to the two pairs. From this information, the components of the horizontal airspeed are found from the relationships: Vx,i=VH,i Cos yi Vy,i=VH,i sin yi.
