A combination vacuum cleaner and blower is described which is particularly adapted for use as an accessory to a fireplace. The apparatus of this invention is a portable hand-held vacuum/blower which is controlled by a reversible fan motor. When operating in a first direction, air is sucked into the vacuum preferably to clean up ashes around the fireplace. A valve is provided to prevent air from being sucked in the blower.
