A lap timing device for swimmers utilizes a proximity sensor to detect the completion of each lap a swimmer swims during a training session. The device, which is preferably portable and in the form of a starting block of standard AAU dimensions, is placed adjacent an edge of a swimming pool. The number of laps of the training session are input and the swimmer stands on the diving platform of the device.
