The present invention provides an evaporative cooling system for an automotive engine or the like which system does not require a plurality of electromagnetic valves and conduits and which can control the boiling point to a level appropriate for the instant mode of engine operation.

In an internal combustion engine having a structure subject to high heat flux, a cooling system comprising: a coolant jacket disposed about said structure and into which coolant is introduced in liquid form and discharged in gaseous form; a radiator in fluid communication with said coolant jacket and in which coolant vapor is condensed to its liquid state; means for returning the liquid coolant formed in said radiator to said coolant jacket in a manner which maintains the level of liquid coolant in said coolant jacket at a first predetermined level, said first predetermined level being selected to maintain said structure immersed in a predetermined depth of liquid coolant, said coolant jacket, radiator and said liquid coolant returning means defining a cooling circuit; a reservoir in constant fluid communication with said cooling circuit; and a valve which controls the communication between the interior of said reservoir and the ambient atmosphere, said valve being operable to selectively control the pressure in said reservoir and said cooling circuit.
