A stepping motor comprising: a permanent magnet rotor provided with magnetic poles on the periphery thereof; first and second stator sets, each having magnetic pole plates provided with tooth-shaped pole pieces extended in the axial direction and arranged at substantially uniform intervals around said rotor; and a coil for magnetizing said tooth-shaped pole pieces; wherein said tooth-shaped pole pieces are divided by a high reluctance area so that the magnetic reluctance of each pole piece changes substantially symmetrically with respect to the central axis thereof.
