The invention relates to alkaline resistant glasses, particularly glass fibers, which comprise silica, calcia and at least one lanthanide series metal oxide effective to enhance the alkali resistance of the glasses.

A glass composition comprising alkaline resistant glass fibers comprising: alumina in an amount of about 15.1% or less by weight, silica －about 30% to about 70% by weight, calcia －about 23% to about 60% by weight, magnesia －0% to less than about 6% by weight, at least one lanthanide series metal oxide －about 0.1% to about 20% by weight effective to enhance the alkali resistance of said glass fibers, zirconia plus thoria －0% to about 3% by weight, and alkali metal oxide －0% to less than about 3% by weight.
