Defects such as separations formed within a pneumatic tire are detected in the non-destructive manner by rotating the inflated tire with respect to a pair of displacement sensors which are urged against an outer surface of the tire at a substantially zero pressure and a higher pressure, respectively, measuring displacement values of the sensors over one revolution of the tire, and deriving differences between displacement values at corresponding measuring points on the tire surface.
