A nonclogging rotary disk filter is disclosed. The invention has relief holes provided in rotatable disks such that oil, other liquids, and gases may be separated from a liquid while the disks are rotated at high speeds. The relief holes are located close to the rotatable shaft supporting the disks.

A nonclogging rotary disk filter is disclosed. The invention has relief holes provided in rotatable disks such that oil, other liquids, and gases may be separated from a liquid while the disks are rotated at high speeds. The relief holes are located close to the rotatable shaft supporting the disks. When the disks are rotated at high speeds, lighter liquids, oil, and gas bubbles tend to migrate to the area near the shaft which has relatively low centrifugal forces. In a gravitational field, the relief holes allow the lighter liquids, oil, and gas bubbles to migrate upwardly through the disks for removal. The disks are rotated fast enough to establish a barrier layer in a liquid over a working area of the disk surface having a surface velocity greater than 15 feet per second.

A nonclogging rotary disk filter for separating liquids or gas from a liquid to be filtered, comprising: a housing defining a chamber having an inlet and an outlet, the chamber being adapted to receive a liquid to be filtered; a rotatable shaft disposed within the chamber, the shaft having a passageway through at least a portion of the shaft in fluid communication with a filtrate output to allow filtered liquid to flow out of the rotary disk filter; a plurality of porous disks, the disks being mounted upon the rotatable shaft, the porous disks being in fluid communication with the passageway in the shaft, the porous disks having a smooth surface to minimize turbulence during high speed rotation of the disks; relief holes in the disks near the rotatable shaft, the relief holes being adapted to permit a second separable liquid or a gas, which is to be separated from the liquid to be filtered, to migrate through the relief holes to a purge output in the housing for removal; and, a liquid barrier layer, the barrier layer being established in the liquid to be filtered immediately adjacent a working area on the surface of the disks, where the surface of each such disk has a surface velocity that is at least greater than 15 feet per second over said working area.
