A shaft seal for sealing fluids includes a rotating shaft means having an axis and an external cylindrical surface. A seal ring is disposed about the shaft and has an internal cylindrical surface juxtaposed to the external cylindrical surface and mating therewith to form mating cylindrical surfaces.

One of the cylindrical surfaces is a smooth cylindrical surface, and a plurality of spaced, generally parallel indentations are formed in the smooth cylindrical surface, the indentations extending at an acute angle relative to the axial direction of the shaft such that fluid entering the mating cylindrical surfaces is returned by the indentations as the shaft rotates.
