A method of cleaning a soiled aluminum surface without causing significant corrosion thereof which comprises applying to said surface a cleaning composition or aqueous solution thereof, said composition comprising: (a) 1-10% of an amine having a pKa greater than 9, (b) 0.1-4% of a zinc salt, selected from the group consisting of zinc halides, zinc sulphate, zinc nitrate and organic salts of zinc, (c) 0.1-10% of a complexing agent which is glycine, (d) 0.2-30% of an anionic surfactant, (e) 0.005-0.2% of benzotriazole; and (f) water, the composition having a pH of 9-11, and thereafter rinsing said surface.
