An in-line sleeve valve has a housing and a sleeve. A sleeve gate is slidably mounted to the sleeve. A velocity guide is mounted to the sleeve gate. The velocity guide, sleeve, and sleeve gate define a passage to rapidly equalize the pressure across the velocity guide upon initially opening the valve. A drive assembly has arms mounted to the housing for swinging movement. The sleeve gate has grooves for receiving slide blocks.
