Demulsifiers which contain compounds of formula I R－O－Zn－O－(AO)xH (I) wherein R is a linear or branched, saturated or unsaturated C1-18 alkyl radical, Zn is an oligoglycosyl radical with n=1 to 5 hexose or pentose units or mixtures thereof, AO is an ethylene oxide, propylene oxide or butylene oxide radical or mixtures thereof and x is 1 to 100, are useful for breaking water-in-oil petroleum emulsions. Such demulsifiers have a low specificity and are biodegradable.

A method for breaking a water-in-oil petroleum emulsion, comprising contacting a water-in-oil petroleum emulsion with a demulsifier comprising an alkoxylated alkyl polyglycoside of formula I R－O－Zn－O－(AO)xH (I) wherein R is a linear or branched, saturated or unsaturated C1-18 alkyl radical; Zn is an oligoglycosyl radical with n=1 to 5 hexose or pentose units or mixtures thereof; AO is ethylene oxide, propylene oxide or butylene oxide or mixtures thereof; and x is 1 to 100.
