An improved liquid spray masking composition including an effective amount of a non-volatile polyhydroxy component is provided. The preferred polyhydroxy components comprise polyglycerols, especially triglycerols or larger polyglycerols. The presence of such materials in masking compositions improves performance of the compositions with respect to inhibition of high temperature swelling, blistering or spotting of the painted surface to which it is applied.

A method of masking a painted surface, comprising: applying a masking composition to said surface, and then drying said surface at a temperature at or above room temperature, wherein said masking composition comprises an amount of an oligomeric polyglycerol material effective to retard swelling, blistering and spotting in said surface according to the formula: H－[(OCH2CHOHCH2)n(OCH(CH2OH)CH2m]－OH wherein m and n are each integers between 0 and 30, inclusive, provided that m +n is greater than or equal to 2.
