A hydraulic system including hydraulic units serving as wheel motors and pumps is disclosed. The hydraulic units include a stationary member supporting cylinders with piston assemblies reciprocating therein. The piston assemblies have bodies and follower assemblies which follow lobes on a rotary cam. The piston assemblies serve both as pistons and as timing valves for controlling the flow of fluids. The piston assemblies may have either undercuts or internal passages in their bodies. The follower assemblies have compliant springs elastically positioning rollers between arms of a yoke to allow lateral movement of these rollers relative to the arm of the supporting yokes. Sealing mechanisms are provided which seal between the rotary cam and the stationary member to form an annular scavenge chamber. At least one sealing mechanism has a non-rotating annular intermediate member which pilots relative to the rotary cam. A static seal accommodates radial movement between the stationary and intermediate members. A dynamic seal, preferably a ferrofluidic seal, is interposed between the intermediate member and the rotary cam.

A hydraulic unit adapted for use with a wheel of a vehicle, the hydraulic unit comprising: A and B conduits connectable with low and high pressure sources of fluid; a rotary cam having a plurality of circumaxially spaced lobes and being adapted to affix to the wheel to turn therewith; a stationary member being adapted to affix to the vehicle adjacent the rotary cam and having a plurality of circumaxially spaced and radially extending cylinders, each cylinder having A and B ports in fluid communication with the A and B conduits, a control port located adjacent the A and B ports, and a chamber port spaced from the A, B and control ports and fluidly coupled to a control port of another cylinder; and a plurality of pistons, each piston having a body and a follower, each body being reciprocable within a respective cylinder to define a variable volume chamber, the chamber port of each cylinder being in fluid communication with variable volume chamber and being isolated from its A and B ports, at least one piston having a first internal passage within its body which fluidly connects and disconnects the control port of a cylinder with one of the A or B. ports of that cylinder during reciprocation of the piston as the follower engages the rotary cam; wherein the pistons serve to control the flow of fluid into and out of variable volume chambers of other pistons in timed sequence with the rotary cam.
