A hand-held portable sampler uses a vacuum to induce the flow of air into an air chamber and around a deflector plate mounted substantially transverse to the overall airflow pattern and with edges thereof close to the surface of nutrient material contained in culture containers between opposite sides of the enclosure and the deflector plate to define a constricted air passage.
