A method of producing poly(vinyl alcohol) coated films having enhanced properties, comprising: coating a substrate with a poly(vinyl alcohol) solution which includes a blend of at least two poly(vinyl alcohol) components, a first component being a poly(vinyl alcohol) resin having a hydrolysis level of at least about 98% and a second component being a poly(vinyl alcohol) resin having a hydrolysis level from about 80% to about 90% hydrolysis.
