Low molecular weight resins that usually are aliphatic and that include crosslinking thermal functional groups are useful as liquid molding compounds for reaction injection molding or resin transfer molding. The compounds eliminate the need to handle solvents when preparing thermoset composites.

A method for making a liquid molding compound of the formula [Figure] comprising the step of simultaneously condensing an unsaturated anhydride selected from the group consisting of: [Figure] wherein D=a hydrocarbon radical including an unsaturated functionality selected from the group consisting of: [Figure] [Figure] R1=lower alkyl, aryl, substituted alkyl, substituted aryl, lower alkoxy, aryloxy, halogen, or mixtures thereof; G=－CH2－, －O－, －S－, －SO2－, －SO－, －CO－, －CH(R)－, or －C(R)2－; j=0, 1, or 2; T=allyl or methallyl; Me=methyl; and R=hydrogen, lower alkyl, or phenyl, with a diamine of the formula H2N－R2－NH2 and a compound of the formula OCN－R3－NCO, wherein R3 is a hydrocarbon radical and R2 is a hydrocarbon radical. The method of claim 1 further comprising the step of blending the condensation product with an effective amount of a diluent.
