An apparatus for reducing contaminants in exhaust gases of an engine, the apparatus comprising: a light source for producing radiant energy which converts oxygen in air inducted into the engine to ozone; a transformer for driving the at least one light source; and a connector for connecting the transformer to an electrical system of the engine; wherein the ozone increases the efficiency of combustion of fuel by the engine thereby reducing the amount of hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide in the exhaust gases.
