A method for fabricating a vibration isolating housing for a data storage system is disclosed. The base of a data storage system housing includes a primary base having a first aperture, and a secondary base configured to fit within the first aperture of the primary base. The primary base and secondary base are placed in a mold of an injection molding apparatus so that a first gap is defined between the primary base and secondary base. Polymeric material is flowed into the first gap to form an integral, substantially rigid housing base upon curing of the polymeric material. The primary base may further include a second aperture for accommodating the configuration of a tertiary base, with a second gap being provided between the primary base and the tertiary base for receiving polymeric material to form an integral housing base comprising the primary, secondary, and tertiary bases. A spindle motor assembly of the data storage system may be mounted to the secondary base before or after placing the secondary base into the injection mold. A compliant member formed in the first gap attenuates spindle motor induced vibrations that would otherwise be transmitted to the primary base and the components mounted thereon. An actuator assembly may be mounted to the tertiary base which is also isolated from the primary base by a compliant member formed in the second gap. The novel vibration isolating housing also provides for dampening of external shock vibrations impinging on the data storage system housing.

[ What is claimed is:] [1.] A method of manufacturing a composite housing base of a data storage system, the data storage system having a data storage disk, a spindle motor adapted for rotating the data storage disk, and an actuator assembly having a transducer for transferring data to and from the data storage disk, the method of manufacturing the data storage system comprising the steps of:providing an injection molding apparatus including a mold;providing a primary base and a secondary base;mounting at least a portion of the spindle motor to the secondary base;placing the primary base and the secondary base into the mold so that a first gap is defined between the primary base and secondary base, the secondary base placed within the mold in a coplanar relationship with respect to the primary base; andflowing polymeric material into the first gap to form a compliant element between the primary base and the secondary base, wherein the compliant element attenuates internally or externally induced vibrations transmitted between the primary base and the secondary base.
