A portable computer with a base (22) containing media, batteries, and keyboard, with the a CPU and motherboard located in a planar CPU module (28) separate from and behind the flat-panel display module (26), mechanically connected to the display module (26) with a deployment mechanism, and functionally connected to the display module (26) and base (22) by a base flexible circuit (78). The translating mechanism operates such that when the display module (26) is closed, the CPU module (28) is adjacent to the display module (26), and when the display module (26) is open, the CPU module (28) is positioned with a gap between the it and the display module (26).

[9.] A portable computer comprising in combinationa display module comprising a flat-panel display, a bezel, and a rear cover;CPU module containing a CPU and a plurality of components associated with a portable computer motherboard, a heat-spreading front cover element facing said display module, and a rear cover;a base containing a keyboard, a plurality of connectors, a plurality of media, batteries, a printed circuit board, a pointing device, a top cover, and a bottom cover;means for connecting said display module, said CPU module and said base in a substantially closed planar module when the computer is closed and for moving said display module with respect to said base for viewing when the computer is open;a plurality of compliant flexures for positioning said CPU module adjacent to said display module when the computer is closed, and positioning said CPU module heat-spreading front cover parallel to and spaced away from said display module when the computer is being used and,an extensible signal relaying means for maintaining functional connection of said CPU module to said base, and of said CPU module to said display module. The computer of claim 9 wherein a thermally conductive material resides between said CPU is bonded to said heat-spreading front cover element. The computer of claim 9 including deploying means activated by a thermal monitoring sub-system for automatically positioning said CPU module adjacent to said flat-panel display when the computer is closed and separating said CPU module from said flat-panel display and said base when necessitated by internal temperatures during use. The computer of claim 11 wherein the deployment of said CPU module is driven by a shape-memory alloy element. The computer of claim 9 wherein the heat-spreading front cover is also an EMI containment shield. The computer of claim 9 including a fan located in the plane of the CPU module. A portable computer comprising in combinationa display module comprising a flat panel display, a bezel and a rear cover;a CPU module containing a CPU and a plurality of components associated with a portable computer motherboard, a heat-spreading front cover element facing said display module and a rear cover;a base containing a keyboard, a plurality of connectors, a plurality of media, batteries, a printed circuit board, a pointing device, a top cover and a bottom cover;means for connecting said display module, said CPU module and said base in a substantially closed planar module when the computer is closed and not in use and for moving said display module with respect to said base for viewing when the computer is in use;a plurality of compliant flexures for positioning said CPU module adjacent to said display module when the computer is closed, and positioning said CPU module heat-spreading front cover parallel to and spaced away from said display module when the computer is being used;a link pivotally attached to said base and said CPU module for automatically constraining said CPU module against said display module when the display is closed, and for automatically forcing said CPU module to translate as constrained by said compliant flexures when the display is open; andan extensible signal relaying means for maintaining functional connection of said CPU module to said base, and of said CPU module to said display module. The computer of claim 15 wherein said extensible signal relaying means for maintaining functional connection of said CPU module to said base is contained in said link. The computer of claim 15 including a fan located in the plane of the CPU module.
