[ We claim:] [1.] A method of inhibiting the precipitation and deposition of scale on metal surfaces in contact with industrial cooling waters comprising the addition of an effective, scale-inhibiting amount of a water-soluble N,N-diallyl-N-alkyl-N-(sulfoalkyl) ammonium betaine containing copolymer

[ We claim:] [1.] A method of inhibiting the precipitation and deposition of scale on metal surfaces in contact with industrial cooling waters comprising the addition of an effective, scale-inhibiting amount of a water-soluble N,N-diallyl-N-alkyl-N-(sulfoalkyl) ammonium betaine containing copolymer in an amount of from about 0.1 ppm to about 300 ppm, wherein said copolymer is formed from the polymerization of a betaine of the formula: [ STR 9 ] wherein R is selected from the group consisting of alkyl groups having about 1 to 20 carbon atoms and R.sub.1 is selected from the group consisting of C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl groups, phenyl groups, naphthyl groups, benzyl groups and naphthylmethyl groups, and an anionic monomer selected from the group consisting of acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, maleic anhydride, itaconic acid, vinyl sulfonic acid, styrene sulfonate, sodium acrylamidomethyl propane sulfonic acid and maleic acid.
