[ I claim:] [1.] A cover plate in combination with a ratchet wrench, the ratchet wrench having a head portion with an opening formed therein, a drive gear and a pawl being disposed in the opening, the cover plate comprising:a substantially flat body having an upper surface and an opposite lower surface,a plurality of spaced-apart segments formed on the lower surface of the body and extending substantially perpendicularly therefrom,each segment having an end distal from the lower surface,the end of each segment having a respective protrusion formed thereon,receiving means formed within the opening in the head of the ratchet wrench,wherein, when the cover plate is received in the opening in the head of the wrench, the protrusion on the end of each segment engages the receiving means within the opening in the head of the wrench to lock the cover plate in said opening such that a seal is formed between the cover plate and the head of the ratchet wrench and the drive gear and pawl are protected from dirt infiltration.
