A method for reducing and controlling the formation and release of acid gases and odors associated therewith, particularly from hydrogen sulfide, in sewerage or waste water, wherein magnesium hydroxide and/or magnesium oxide are added to the sewerage or waste water.

[ We claim:] [1.] A method for reducing the formation and release of hydrogen sulfide in municipal sewerage or waste water, comprising the step of:adding an effective amount of an agent that includes a compound selected from the group consisting of magnesium hydroxide and magnesium oxide to said municipal sewerage or waste water, wherein said municipal sewerage or waste water includes at lease one compound which can be reduced to form hydrogen sulfide.
