A large and economical type of multi-stack vertical tube evaporator (MS-VTE) having units of multiple stacks of vertical tube bundles or stages mounted in a single vessel, and having its liquid feed pumped to the uppermost VTE bundle stack or stage and having the feed then cascading downward through the lower bundle stacks in series flow, and wherein all the tube bundles are heated with the same waste steam of no or low $-value, e. g. with turbine reject steam in parallel flow under vacuum into the steam-sides of all tube bundles in the unit through a common steam conduit; and wherein the feed liquid is progressively evaporated from stage to stage or stack to stack and the vapors produced in the tubes of each bundle during the partial evaporation of the feed are separated between the stacks and condensed by parallel flow into one or more condensers. Applied to seawater desalination in a co-generation procedure with a coastal power plant, this evaporator produces about one pound of distilled water per pound of turbine reject steam used under vacuum and applied in a single-effect mode in one evaporator unit or several units mounted in a single vessel with a condenser, to substantially reduce the cost of such useful distilled water. When applied in a similar cogeneration procedure but in a multi-effect series mode of several such units, or multiple units, the rate of distilled water production can be increased several-fold based the amount of turbine reject steam applied.

[ The following is claimed:] [1.] A process for evaporation of a liquid by single-effect downflow vertical tube evaporation, with heat of low value used to drive said evaporation, comprising:(a) providing for a vertically stacked unit of several multi-tube evaporation stages, wherein said stages are a multiplicity of said stages within a single evaporator vessel;(b) heating said stages in parallel with low temperature waste heat in the range of about 100.degree. to 160.degree. F. under vacuum at the same temperature in each of said stacked stages; (c) cascading said liquid to downflow as films through said stacked unit of evaporation stages and partially evaporating said liquid producing vapor;(d) controlling vapor pressure drop within said tubes in said stages during said partial evaporation of said liquid and (e) condensing said vapor to produce distilled liquid. [8.] A process for desalination of seawater by single-effect downflow vertical tube evaporation with power plant turbine reject steam being applied to cause said evaporation, comprising:(a) providing for a unit consisting of a multiplicity of vertically stacked bundles of vertical evaporation tubes, wherein said unit of stacked bundles are within a single evaporator vessel, or providing for a multiplicity of several units in parallel array within said single evaporator vessel to increase the capacity for producing vapor from said seawater;(b) heating said unit by flowing said steam at a temperature in the range of about 100.degree. to 160.degree. F. under vacuum via parallel steam conduits into said tube bundles and by condensing said steam on said tubes at constant temperature with controlled pressure losses;(c) partially evaporating said seawater by causing said seawater to downflow as films through said vertical evaporation tubes through said multiplicity of vertically stacked bundles to produce vapor from said seawater;(d) controlling vapor pressure drop during said partial evaporation and(e) condensing said vapor to form distilled water product.
