The method of operating a synchronous machine through estimation of the stator flux utilizing synchronous machine equations and then stabilizing the flux estimation process by providing stabilizing feedback signals with a predetermined transfer function.

S+.omega..sub..eta..sup.2) h .zeta. being an adjustable damping factor; thenutilizing the narrow-band filter to process the measured instantaneous current of the synchronous machine and produce the fundamental component of the synchronous machine current.
