A method is disclosed for treating drilling mud discharged from a well wherein the mud contains drill cuttings and paramagnetic materials such as hematite. The drilling mud is first passed through a high-gradient magnetic separator to separate the paramagnetic materials from the drilling mud. The drilling mud is then passed through a centrifuge separator to remove the drill cuttings from the drilling mud.

[ What we claim is:] [1.] A method for treating drilling fluid discharged from a well, said drilling fluid containing drill cuttings and paramagnetic materials, comprising the steps of:(a) passing the drilling fluid through a high-gradient magnetic separator to separate the paramagnetic materials from the drilling fluid;(b) discharging the paramagnetic materials from the magnetic separator, said paramagnetic materials being substantially free of the drilling fluid;(c) passing the drilling fluid through a centrifuge separator to remove the drill cuttings from the drilling fluid; and(d) after step (b), returning the paramagnetic materials to the well for reuse.
