A number of embodiments of exhaust temperature sensors that cooperate with an exhaust control for maintaining optimum engine performance by controlling the exhaust temperature to maintain the desired pulse back effect on the exhaust system.

[ What is claimed is:] [1.] An internal combustion engine having at least one combustion chamber in which combustion occurs, an exhaust system for discharging exhaust gasses from said combustion chamber through an exhaust pipe to the atmosphere through a discharge opening, exhaust effect control means for effecting the transmission of reflective exhaust gas pulses acting upon said exhaust port from said exhaust pipe, an exhaust temperature sensor having a detector end for detecting temperatures and a terminal end spaced from the detector end for transmitting a control signal for controlling said exhaust effect control means, and means for mounting said exhaust temperature sensor in said exhaust system for sensing the temperature of a wall thereof by said detector end without experiencing conditions that would cause fluctuating signals to be transmitted from said terminal end.
