The present invention relates to zinc gluconate gel-containing topical compositions which have an anti-irritant effect on the skin. In particular embodiments, the gel matrix may further comprise chlorhexidine gluconate, wherein the zinc gluconate gel diminishes the irritant and/or allergenic effect
