초록

In a wireless communications system, a subscriber unit transmit power is determined. Thereafter, a power margin is determined by subtracting the subscriber unit transmit power from a maximum transmit power. In response to a current communication mode of the subscriber unit, a predetermined power margin requirement for the current communication mode, and the current power margin, a communication mode quality is estimated. [ What is claimed is:] [1.] A method for estimating a communication mode quality for a subscriber unit in a wireless communication system service area, the method comprising the steps of:determining a subscriber unit transmit power;subtracting the subscriber unit transmit power from a maximum transmit power to determine a power margin;determining a current communication mode; andestimating the communication mode quality in response to a predetermined power margin requirement of the current communication mode and the power margin.
