[ We claim:] [1.] A pharmaceutical composition comprising a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier and a compound of formula I or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof: [ STR 2 ] wherein R and R.sub.1 are independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, hydroxy, lower alkyl and amino;

[ We claim:] [1.] A pharmaceutical composition comprising a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier and a compound of formula I or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof: [ STR 2 ] wherein R and R.sub.1 are independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, hydroxy, lower alkyl and amino; or R and R.sub.1 together may be oxygen;R.sub.2, R.sub.3 and R.sub.4 are independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, hydroxy, halogen, lower alkoxy, lower alkyl and alkyl mercapto;at least two of R.sub.5, R.sub.6 and R.sub.7 are identically selected from the group consisting of hydroxy and lower alkoxy, and the third is selected from the group consisting of hydroxy, halogen, lower alkoxy, lower alkyl, amino and lower dialkylamino; with the proviso that when at least one of R.sub.2, R.sub.3 or R.sub.4 is lower alkoxy, then each of R.sub.5, R.sub.6 and R.sub.7 are hydroxy or lower alkoxy;R.sub.8 is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen and lower alkyl;o is 0, 1 or 2; andM is selected from the group consisting of hydroxy, lower alkoxy, and the group O-Cat, wherein Cat is a pharmaceutically acceptable cation.
