Processes and compositions for nitration of N-substituted isowurtzitane compounds with concentrated nitric acid at elevated temperatures to form HNIW and recovery of gamma HNIW with high yields and purities. Polymorphic conversion of HNIW crystals to epsilon HNIW crystals is also disclosed.

[ We claim:] [1.] ) A process for the preparation of hexanitrohexaazaisowurtzitane (HNIW) through the nitration of N-substituted,hexazaisowurtzitane (NHISW) with concentrated nitric acid by the steps of: (a) forming a solution consisting essentially of an NHISW and the concentrated nitric acid, and (b) heating the solution and maintaining the solution at a temperature of at least about 75 degrees C. for a time sufficient to produce a solid product containing HNIW.
