The disinfectant-sterilent activity of formulation requires air exposure and is dependent on the presence of the halide-haloperoxidase combination employed, the activity of the oxidase present, the availability of oxidase-specific substrate and the availability of O.sub.2.

[ The embodiments of the invention in which an exclusive property or privilege is claimed are defined as follows:] [1.] A method for killing or inhibiting the growth of microorganisms comprising the steps of:(a) maintaining under substantially anaerobic conditions a microbicidal composition comprising a haloperoxidase selected from myeloperoxidase and eosinophil peroxidase, a halide selected from chloride, bromide and combinations thereof, and a peroxide generating agent capable of generating peroxide upon exposure to oxygen;(b) exposing the composition to oxygen to activate the microbicidal activity of the composition; and(c) contacting the microorganisms with the activated composition to kill or inhibit the growth of the microorganisms.
