A monitor for detecting overheating of a critical component in a combustion turbine is provided. The monitor, when used in conjunction with a closed-loop cooling system, comprises a coating comprising an indicator material having an activation temperature. The coating is situated on the internal cooling passages of the critical component. The monitor further comprises a sensor connected to an outlet conduit of the cooling system for determining the amount of degradation of indicator material by monitoring the cooling fluid flowing through the outlet conduit. Embodiments further comprising "sniffer" tubes for use with open-loop air cooling systems also are provided.

[ What is claimed is:] [1.] In a combustion turbine, a monitor for detecting overheating of a critical component, the turbine having:a closed loop cooling system comprising:an outlet conduit for removing cooling fluid from the critical component; andinternal cooling passages in the critical component through which the cooling fluid flows;the monitor comprising:a plurality of coatings on the internal cooling passages, said coatings respectively comprising an indicator material having an activation temperature, with at least two of such indicator materials having a different activation temperature; anda sensor connected to the outlet conduit for determining the degradation of each such indicator material by monitoring the cooling fluid flowing through the outlet conduit and thereby monitoring a rise in temperature of the critical component above predetermined levels equal to the activation temperatures.
