[ What is claimed is:] [1.] A low odor, aqueous quick acting cold temperature disinfecting and/or sterilization solution for medical instruments, comprising:from 1% to about 30% by weight of hydrogen peroxide;a C.sub.3 to C.sub.12 dibasic carboxylic acid/carboxylate salt buffering system, wherein the carboxylic component of the buffering system has a concentration of from about 1% to about 30% by weight, and the weight ratio of carboxylic acid to carboxylate salt is between 1:9 to 9:1; andwater;said solution having a pH within the range of from about 2 to 6, its buffering capacity being achieved by the carboxylic acid/carboxylate buffering system, and being effective at room temperature to disinfect medical instruments within 30 minutes without corroding the surface of said instruments;said solution being stable and effective for over a year.
