This invention provides 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinoline compounds and their pharmaceuticallyacceptable salts, pharmaceutical formulations of said compounds, and methods for treating hyperglycemia associated with non-insulin dependent diabetes and for treating hyperlipidemia.

[ We claim:] [1.] A 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinoline compound of Formula I: [ STR 49 ] wherein: R.sup.0 is selected from the group consisting of [ STR 50 ] and R.sup.2 is hydrogen, C.sub.1-4 acyl, C.sub.1-4 alkyloxycarbonyl, C.sub.1-4 alkylaminocarbonyl, arylcarbonyl, aryloxycarbonyl, aryloxy C.sub.1-4 alkylcarbonyl, arylaminocarbonyl, aryl C.sub.1-4 acyl, aryl C.sub.1-4 alkyloxycarbonyl, aryl C.sub.1-4 alkylaminocarbonyl, aryl C.sub.1-4 alkylsulfonyl, or an amino-protecting group;R.sup.4 is hydrogen, or C.sub.1-4 alkyl;R.sup.5 is --COOH, --CONR.sup.10 R.sup.11, --CN, --CONHOH, or [ STR 51 ] R.sup.6 is hydrogen, C.sub.1-4 alkyl, aryl, or aryl C.sub.1-4 alkyl; R.sup.7 is hydrogen, halogen, or C.sub.1-4 alkyl;R.sup.9 is hydrogen, C.sub.1-4 alkyl, or aryl;R.sup.10 and R.sup.11 are independently hydrogen, C.sub.1-4 alkyl, or aryl;W is --(CH.sub.2)n--;Y is attached at position 6 or at position 7 of the 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinoline moiety, and is --O--, --S--, --SO--, --SO.sub.2 --, --NH--, --CONR.sup.9 --, --NR.sup.9 --SO.sub.2 --, or --SO.sub.2 --NR.sup.9 --; andn is 1 to 4;or a pharmaceutically-acceptable salt thereof.
