The invention relates to a process for producing aerogels with permanently hydrophobic surface groups, in which a) silicate lyogel is provided, b) the gel provided in step a) is washed with an organic solvent, c) the gel obtained in step b) is surface silylated and d) the surface-silylated gel obtained in step c) is dried, where the organic solvent used in step b) is a diether of formula (I) R.sup.1 --O--(CH.sub.2).sub.n --O--R.sup.2 in which R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are mutually independently the same or different alkyl groups with 1 to 4 C atoms and n is a natural number in the range from 1 to 5.
