The step extends a limited distance away from the seating surface to provide limited pressure relief when the valve body is at an intermediate position that is between the opened and closed positions. Step cross-section and axial length may be configured based on desired hydraulic behavior. In a preferred embodiment, the control valve step is configured for injection rate shaping.
