The present invention relates to compositions and methods for treating water to reduce the phosphate level thereof and control the growth therein of algae and other microorganisms by treating the water with an effective amount of a composition containing a lanthanide halide.

A method for reducing the concentration of phosphates in water, comprising:contacting the water with an effective amount of a composition comprising:(a) a water soluble lanthanide halide salt in sufficient quantity to precipitate phosphate compounds from water;(b) a polymer selected from the group consisting of poly(acrylamide-co-acrylic acid), chitosan, polyacrylamide, poly(acrylic acid), and polyvinyl alcohol having a molecular weight of at least around 15,000,000; and(c) a binder.
