A vacuum insulating glass (IG) unit is provided with an array of pillars or supports between opposing glass sheets. At least some of the pillars are coated on at least one surface thereof with a dry lubricant material such as diamond like carbon (DLC). This coating permits the glass sheet(s) to move relative to one another during thermal expansion while minimizing the degree to which the pillars scratch or crack the glass during such relative movement. The provision of such coating(s) minimizes pillar scratching of the glass and/or pillars inducing indentations in the glass substrate(s).
