A printing paper comprising:a paper web; and a coating comprising a formulation applied in a layer of substantially uniform thickness to each side of the paper web in an amount of approximately 2 to 5 lbs. per side, per ream of the paper web and dried thereon, wherein the topography of the sheet surface is substantially not altered by the application and drying of the formulation, and wherein the formulation comprises; a pigment including hollow synthetic polymer particles in an amount of about 30-60% by weight of the total dry ingredients of the formulation; and a binder including a high molecular weight modified starch in an amount of about 40-70% by weight of the total dry ingredients of the formulation.
