A stretchable tape includes a nonextensible layer having a separation line, a pressure-sensitive adhesive layer, an extensible layer and an adhesive inhibiting masking between adjacent portions of the extensible layer and adhesive layer to enable relative movement and tape stretchability. The tape is especially useful in the manufacture of diaper tabs. The tape stock and diaper tabs may be manufactured using conventional web processing equipment.

A stretchable tape having length, width and thickness directions, said tape comprising with respect to its lengthwise direction a central segment having a terminal segment on each side thereof, said tape comprising with respect to its thickness direction a nonextensible layer, an adhesive layer applied to one side of said nonextensible layer and extending along at least a portion of said central segment, said nonextensible layer including a separation line extending across the tape width in said central segment, adhesive-inhibiting masking extending along a surface of said adhesive layer, an extensible layer extending along an adjacent portion of said adhesive-inhibiting masking in said central segment, said extensible layer operably connecting said terminal segments to substantially elastically bear lengthwise tension loads with separation of adjacent portions of said nonextensible layer, said adhesive-inhibiting masking inhibiting adhesion and enabling relative movement between the adjacent portion of said extensible layer and adhesive layer to thereby provide said tape with stretchable properties.
