A phosphate and ammonia free composition for treating an object (i.e., lumber, plywood and other wood products) is described. The treating solution may be applied to the object by dipping, soaking, brushing, spraying, etc., however, vacuum and/or pressure techniques may be used to impregnate the object according to the method of this invention, including both the empty-cell process and the full-cell process.
