This invention is directed to filtrate-holder and reversible-well collection plates composed of polypropylene and Teflon.RTM. resin, and to their use, in connection with compatible filter units, in high-throughput screening assays for assessing the binding of small molecules to proteins.

A sample preparation device comprising a liquid retaining device, said liquid retaining device comprising: a substrate having at least a substrate well, said substrate being composed of a polymer having a first biomolecule binding capacity and an additive having a second biomolecule binding capacity less than said first biomolecule binding capacity, wherein said at least one substrate well is configured to receive a sample from said sample preparation device; wherein said additive is selected from the group consisting of TEFLON(R)(tetrafluoroethylene) resin, polyetheretherketone, polyphenylene sulfide, perfluoroalkoxyalkane, fluorinated ethylenepropylene and CORIAN. 2. The device of claim 1, wherein said substrate is composed of from about 1-10% Teflon.RTM. resin and from about 90-99% polypropylene. 3. The device of claim 2, wherein said substrate is composed of about 2.5% Teflon.RTM. resin and about 97.5% polypropylene. 4. The device of claim 1, wherein said sample preparation device comprises a sample reservoir, a base, and a membrane between said sample reservoir and said base. 5. The device of claim 1, wherein said substrate has a plurality of substrate wells.
