The invention is in the field of three-dimensional hollow novelty items and their manufacture, particularly items such as artificial pumpkins that the consumer desires to carve or alter after purchase. A carvable novelty article, such as an artificial Halloween pumpkin, comprises a polyurethane shell substantially surrounding an interior volume and having a thin coating, such as an acrylic elastomer, on the exterior surface of the shell. The carvable article can be formed by an inventive process in which polyurethane foam material, such as material having a nominal density of about 2.5-3.0 pounds per cubic foot, is sprayed from a nozzle rotating with respect to the inside of a mold. After the polyurethane foam article and the mold are separated, the article is coated with an elastomeric coating, such as an acrylic material that is applied as a liquid. Thus, the inventive articles, including those made in accordance with the inventive process, can be used as three-dimensional hollow novelty items of a variety of shapes. In addition, the inventive articles, such as Halloween pumpkins, are carvable, reusable, and can be used with a light source.

The invention is in the field of three-dimensional hollow novelty items and their manufacture, particularly items such as artificial pumpkins that the consumer desires to carve or alter after purchase. A carvable novelty article, such as an artificial Halloween pumpkin, comprises a polyurethane shell substantially surrounding an interior volume and having a thin coating, such as an acrylic elastomer, on the exterior surface of the shell. The carvable article can be formed by an inventive process in which polyurethane foam material, such as material having a nominal density of about 2.5-3.0 pounds per cubic foot, is sprayed from a nozzle rotating with respect to the inside of a mold. A liquid crystal composition comprising as a first component thereof at least one compound selected from the compounds according to claim 1, and as a second component thereof at least one compound selected from the group consisting of the compounds of formula (5) or (6) wherein R2and R3independently are an alkyl group of 1-10 carbon atoms, and any nonadjacent methylene groups in said alkyl group may be substituted by oxygen atoms of --CH=CH--, and any hydrogen atoms in the alkyl group may be substituted by fluorine atoms; X2is --CN or --C≡C--CN; ring D is trans-1,4-cyclohexylene, 1,4-phenylene, 1,3-dioxane-2,5-diyl, or pyrimidine-2,5-diyl; trans-1,4 cyclohexylene, 1,4-phenylene, 1,3-dioxane-2,5-diyl, or pyrimidine-2,5-diyl; ring E is trans-1,4 cyclohexylene, 1,4-phenylene wherein the hydrogen atoms may be substituted by fluorine atoms, or pyrimidine-2,5-diyl; ring F is trans-1,m4-cyclohexylene or 1,4-phenylene; Z6is 1,2-ethylene, --COO--, or a covalent bond; L3,L4and L5independently are hydrogen or fluorine; b, c, and d independently are 0 or 1. 17.
